Jason stared at the distant television screen, eyes glazed over as he wondered how the hell he had managed to get into this mess. He didn’t care one lick about the basketball game, and he was pretty sure the volume wasn’t even on, but as long as it let him avoid paying attention to the painfully boring double date at his table, he could crane his neck and watch an irrelevant game of college basketball all night long.

Of course, it wasn’t like he could ignore his three dinner companions forever. Sensing that the moment was appropriate, he chuckled politely and nodded to Tammy, the boisterous brunette that had arranged the whole evening to show off her new beau. She was a nice enough girl, but she had a rather dire habit of telling funny stories over and over and over again. Presently, she was regaling them all with an allegedly hilarious tale of how she had once ordered the wrong pair of shoes and had to get them returned. It was funnier if you were familiar with the website, he had been reassured several times, but Jason remained unconvinced.

“Can you believe it?” Tammy ended her story, asking the same question he must have heard a dozen times in the last hour. Did she really have to end every anecdote the same way?

Still, there were definitely worse women that one could be forced to listen to. Tammy was a bubbly, bouncy girl with infectious enthusiasm that drenched everyone around her whenever she flashed that big, toothy smile. A pretty enough girl, but damn, she just kept going on and on until the novelty has worn off.

Trying very hard not to look beseeching and desperate, Jason looked pointedly at Kara, his girlfriend. Not for the first time, he marveled at how she was really Tammy’s opposite in most every way. Tall, reserved, blonde, and toned beyond belief, it was rare for her to break out into giggling smiles, but Tammy’s presence was the exception. What a mismatched pair of friends they made.

Kara finally caught his gaze, winking in just the most adorable way possible. Under the table, she slid her hand into his, lacing their fingers together and squeezing gently.

He sighed again, this time with anything but boredom. Truly, he would do anything for her when she melted his heart like that. He would even put up with these inane dinners, god help his soul.

Still, he was left with a smattering of unkind thoughts. She looked amazing, dressed up as she was in a green dress that flattered her curves in all the right places, but he did get the distinct feeling that she had put a lot more effort into her appearance today than on their normal dates. Wasn’t he justified in feeling a tiny bit frustrated that she went to such lengths for Tammy and her new boyfriend?

But just as soon as his thoughts wandered in that direction, he knew that he was the one truly at fault. They hadn’t been going on as many dates lately, just the two of them.
